Juicing Guide/Recipes

Tips for juicing
-
Masticating or “slow” juicers are always better than the high speed type juicers. This is because it “cold-presses” the juice out rather than cutting the vegetables at a high speed which increases oxidation and heat which damage the live nutrients in the food. This is one example of a recommended masticating juicer: https://omegajuicers.com/products/nc800hds-omega-premium-juicier-nutrition-system

It’s not a great idea to juice fruits (too much fructose), especially if you're dealing with a serious metabolic condition like cancer. If these juice recipes are not sweet enough for you, you could add ½ a green granny smith apple per juice (maximum 1 apple).
-
Chop the pieces smaller initially and then work your way up to bigger pieces as you get a feel for what your juicer can handle. Never put too much force on the plunger. The juicer I recommended above does not require chopping for most veggies (light pressure though).
-
It’s always better to juice softer veggies first (ex: cucumbers/lemons) and then let the harder veggies (ex: celery/greens) pull the residual soft pulp through so there is minimal waste.
-
No need to follow these juice/recipes exactly. They are meant for inspiration and ideas. Feel free to modify them to your liking. For taste, cucumber tends to mellow out all the flavors. And then lemon and ginger are stronger flavors that can mask more bitter flavors from the leafy greens. You can parsley and/or cilantro are very detoxifying. Mint is delicious.
-
You don’t need to make a huge glass of juice every time. However the gold standard would be a 16oz juice had twice per day for maximum healing.
-
If you’re storing the juice, try to make enough extra juice so that you can fill a small mason jar (16oz) right to the top, almost to the point of overflowing, and then put the lid on. This will minimize the exposure to oxygen and therefore reduce oxidation.
-
There are many options for the juice pulp if you don’t want to throw them out. One option is to feed the pulp back through the juicer a 2nd time to see how much extra juice you can squeeze out. Another is to save the pulp for making other recipes such as dehydrated crackers. You could also save it to add some to your pet’s food as a healthy topper. Finally, you could compost it.
-
Don’t be frustrated or deterred by juicing because of the clean up/"effort". Cleaning juicers by hand can be a meditative process. I know for me it takes roughly 20 minutes from start to finish to juice (juicer assembly, washing veggies, chopping, juicing, and clean up). Don’t rush the process. Once you establish a good routine, it's a joy. You are doing something incredibly beneficial for your health, so it’s more than worth your time.
-
If you are on the go and want a quick healthy juice, look for good store bought vegetable juice brands such as Suja or Evolution. Check the nutrition and ingredients labels and choose the one with the least amount of fruit and sugar.

Staple Green Juice
Ingredients
-
2 stalks organic celery
-
1 organic cucumber
-
1-2 stalks of a leafy green (suggestions below)
-
1/2 organic lemon (including skin)
-
1/2 inch knob of organic ginger (with skin)
-
Optional: ¼ bunch of organic parsley (including stalks)
Leafy green suggestions: Green curly kale, lacinato kale, purple kale, collard greens, bok choy, spinach, swiss chard, watercress, romaine lettuce.
Note: some leafy greens are more intense/bitter tasting than others (ex: collard greens). You’ll have to get a feel for how much of each you can pack into the juice without it ruining the flavor balance. Also try to rotate between the suggested greens each time you shop for green juice ingredients to get a high variety of nutrients.
